Most oral disease are related to oral bacteria. Our immune system responds to bacterial infections by increasing the threshold for inflammatory pathogens that may destroy host tissues. Our major goals are (1) to understand the compositional changes of oral microflora through environmental changes and (2) to understand immune system responses to various bacteria and their virulence factors, all of which may provide understanding of the pathogens that cause oral infectious dieseases as well as the tools for the diagnosis and treatments of infectious disease at the molecular level.

The Department of Oral Pathology was established in 1998. This department is at the heart of vibrant research activities covering topics in the field of oral and general pathology. The courses designed by the department, including the general and oral pathology, aim to deliver basic knowledge about the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment and prognosis of various diseases manifested in the mouth and maxillofacial area as well as in the whole body, thus providing a link between basic biomedical discoveries and clinical applications.

The Department of Oral Physiology discovers and promotes knowledge of basic functions of cells, tissues, organs, and body systems, as well as the physiological function of oral and maxillofacial regions. Based on this concept, our members strive to concentrate on teaching and research for training the next generation of dental specialists and scientists.

The Department of Oral Biochemistry and Molecular Biology covers topics including the chemical structure, function and metabolism of DNA, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. Through the coursework, dental students can be equipped with biochemical knowledge to explain the underlying causes of various diseases. In addition, our lecture includes the chemical composition, physicochemical properties, and metabolic processes of soft and hard tissues in the oral and maxillofacial region, saliva and acquired enamel integuments, etc.

The Department of Oral Anatomy provides integrated educational courses for human anatomy, histology, embryology, and dental morphology. Oral Anatomy is an applied basic science to study the relationship between the structure and function of the human body for better understanding of basic and clinical dental sciences. We also instruct and supervise students in anatomy(dissection) and histology(microscopy) lab. Cadaveric training gives an extraordinary opportunity to reflect upon the sanctity and dignity of human life as well as medical ethics in the greatest gratitude for the sublime wishes of donor and their families. Research areas in this department include the induced apoptosis of oral cancer, plasma medicine, and applied clinical anatomy in the oral and maxillofacial region.

The Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry was founded in September 1983. The department focused on the development of community oral health program such as community water fluoridation to decrease dental caries. It is now commonly acknowledged that the department is most famous for the research of water fluoridation program in Korea. The research of the department is currently focuses on early caries detection, evaluation of oral health care product, and clinical study as well as community oral health program.

Pharmacology deals with the pharmacodynamic actions, therapeutic applications, acting mechanisms, biotransformations, drug interactions, and side effects of various drugs frequently used in dental practice or in association with dental science. We are investigating the effects of various molecules and drugs on neuronal and model membrane fluidity and cell growth regulation.

An understanding of the fundamental and applied information about materials provides the background needed to correctly use current and future dental materials being developed rapidly. The aim of department of dental materials is to instruct mechanical, physical, chemical and biological properties and clinical aspects of various dental materials so that our students become more familiar with the practice of dentistry and application of future dental materials. Current research and recent papers by our department members are focused on mechanical, physical and chemical properties of various dental alloys and dental composites.

Oral Medicine concerns the clinical diagnosis and non-surgical management of non-dental pathologies affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. The field of oral medicine is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of: a. orofacial pain (Temporomandibular disorders, neuropathic pain, Treatment of bruxism...), b. Mucosal diseases(Salivary dysfunction, halitosis, Burning mouth syndrom, Oral lichen planus, pre-malignantlesions of the oral cavity …), c. Forensic Dentistry(Age determination, medical certificate...). Students learn to do physical examinations, to establish diagnosis and proper treatment plans, and to acquire basic knowledge of systemic diseases that would affect the management of dental patients.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery deals with a special field of clinical dentistry that involves extractions, adjunctive surgical reconstruction in advance of prosthetic treatment, and placement of dental implants. Our faculty are also trained to treat trauma, temporomandibular joint diseases, congenital and acquired defects and deformities, and cancers of the head and neck region and eventually to enhance the function and appearance of patients with such conditions. We focus on providing clinical training in prevention, routine diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment or management of diseases, disorders and defects of the face and jaws. Furthermore, our curriculum includes traumatology, implantology, dorology, salivary gland surgery, and pathology.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology provides the students with the basic knowledge of dentomaxillofacial radiology and covers the intraoral-extraoral radiographic techniques, and specialized radiographic techniques. We educate guidelines for prescribing radiographs according to patients and diseases. The students must be able to expose diagnostic intraoral and panoramic radiographs and interpret the images to determine the presence and extent of pathoses.

Pediatric Dentistry is dentistry for infants, children, and adolescents. It deals with treatment of dental caries, prevention of oral disease, behavior management, craniofacial growth and development, tooth development, management of developing dentition and occlusion, pediatric orthodontics, pediatric oral surgery, and traumatic injury. It also covers hospital dentistry, dentistry for children with special health care needs, managements of oral conditions from congenital and genetic causes. The Department of pediatric dentistry provides education and training to dental students and residents. In addition, the department continues to contribute to development of pediatric dentistry by publishing highly valued research articles based on both basic biomedical and clinical investigations.

Orthodontics is the medical science that involves prevention and treatments to establish normal occlusion and right profile by arranging teeth and monitoring the growth and function of maxilla and mandible. In clinical treatments we perform various types of orthodontic treatments including prevention and treatment of malocclusion in adults and adolescents, growth control of children, co-operation and long term management of cleft lip and palate patients, surgically assisted orthodontic treatments to improve maxillofacial defects, traction of impacted tooth, auxiliary orthodontic treatment for prosthodontic treatment, and clear aligning.

The Department of Dental Anesthesia and Pain Medicine take part in general anesthesia for operative patients, and dental sedation/pain control for dental patients and emergency care. The management of general anesthesia consists of preanesthetic visit, intraoperative care, patients monitoring, postanesthetic care and postoperative pain control. Dental sedation/pain control consists of patient monitoring, postsedation care, sedative titration and airway management. In addition, we carry out emergency care and education. Education for emergency care consists of regular training course (BLS and ACLS) and practice using manikin simulators.

The Department of Conservative Dentistry diagnoses, treats, evaluates prognosis and prevents aesthetic disharmony originated from tooth discoloration, malformation, and hard tissue that improperly affected by deep caries and trauma. Under variable researches and clinical training that is contributed to preserving teeth, the Department of Conservative Dentistry recovers the original function of teeth, such as mastication, pronunciation, and aesthetics, protective function of adjacent tissues, thus being recognized as the basic of dentistry. The Department of Conservative Dentistry is broadly categorized as Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics. The ultimate goal of our department is to improve the quality of life by preserving the natural teeth of individuals.

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, and rehabilitation and maintenance of the masticatory function and aesthetic appearance of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. This specialty can be classified into fixed, and removable restoration, dental implants and occlusion. In the field of education, we are actively developing the training programs for graduate students, residents and practitioners. In addition, by introducing the latest medical techniques, we promote the material research and information exchange with international researchers.

Periodontics is concerned with establishing and maintaining health for the structures that support the teeth, prosthesis and dental implant. The educational program is designed to help dental students develop the ability to instruct patients in preventing periodontal diseases, diagnosing and treating gingivitis and periodontitis, recognizing the interrelationships between periodontal diseases and systemic health, and recognizing and referring patients who require periodontal specialty care. The department offers teaching, research, patient care and implant programs that are conducted at the level of both graduate and residency program.

The Medical Humanities tries to solve human existential problems taking place in health care field, whereas basic or clinical dentistry deals with science or preventing and treating skills of oral diseases. In order to achieve this goal, we study history, culture, ethics and philosophy of health care and medicine(dentistry) and educate students to practice humanely in the real life world.
